Tripod Challenge - Final Score: Three Way Tie!
August 17,
2008
A
big thanks goes out to Erik Van-order-Mey and Sam Karp for setting the
record
straight. Allegedly Chris Fenter, a Wisconsin resident,
pledged
his allegiance to Chicago on Saturday, and then to Milwaukee on Sunday
(hum, doesn't this sound vaguely similar to a certain infamous
Revolutionary War solider, I wonder if Chris could be a direct
descendant). Pat Washburn, also of Wisconsin pledged
his allegiance to Minnesota. These two changes affected the
outcome of the event and put Chicago on top, Minnesota in second and
Milwaukee in third.
The
Milwaukee
Region SCCA played host to the first ever Tripod Challenge which pitted
Milwaukee against Chicago and Minnesota this past weekend at Miller
Park in Milwaukee. The rules were simple, at registration the
entrants declared the allegiance to one of the three regions.
A
point was
assigned to each region for each driver that placed in the top 25.
The
region who captured PAX would get +1 added to their score on each day.
However, Chicago, and then Milwaukee protested the top 25
count
midday
on Saturday and the tally was taken only for the top 20. One
would
have thought Minnesota would have been the ones to raise this protest
considering that they had the least amount of members present.
The
course on Saturday was very technical with lots of sweepers that
rewarded those who could look ahead.
Eric Thompson of MLS Motor
Racing did our part for the Chicago team on Saturday by taking first
place in ESP over Bob Weir (Milwaukee) but it was not enough to get us
into the top 20.
After heat 2 on Saturday
it
looked like Chicago had the win in the bag and Bartek
Borowski (Chicago) was on top of the PAX.
In the afternoon Milwaukee rallied back hard. Jeff Cashmore (Milwaukee)
ended up taking the PAX away from Bartek who fell back to
third behind Tim Aro (Minnesota). However Jeff's hard work was not
enough to move Milwaukee out of last place. The
tally on Saturday was Chicago 8, Minnesota 7 and Milwaukee 6.
Sunday's
course was the reverse
of Saturday's course. In this direction the course flowed
much
better
and the average top 20 times dropped by over two seconds.
However
the
course still favored Milwaukee as Jeff took the PAX again.
Chicago
put up a good fight with Eric Stemler in second and Barteck and Hubert
Borowski in third and fourth, but Chicago still finished in last on
Sunday. Tim Aro lead the charge for
Minnesota
with a fifth place finish. Eric Thompson managed a second
place
finish behind Brian Regannie (Chicago) and ahead of Bob Weir.
Yet
none of the ESP cars finished in the top twenty.
The Sunday only result: Milwaukee 8,
Chicago 6
and Minnesota 7. The final score was a
three way tie: Chicago 14, Minnesota
14 and Milwaukee
14. It looks like we'll have to repeat this challenge again,
until then I think Helga, the official Tripod Trophy should reside at
Milwaukee as the timing bus hood ornament.
